Supreme Court Reins In Activist Lawsuits, Major Win for U.S. Businesses

The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 on Wednesday in Cisco Systems, Inc. v. Doe that private plaintiffs cannot sue under the Alien Tort Statute or the Torture Victim Protection Act for aiding and abetting alleged violations of international law, marking a major restriction on activist lawsuits against U.S. businesses.

The ruling limits the scope of two statutes that have long been used to bring claims against American companies for their operations abroad. Justice Amy Coney Barrett authored the majority opinion, joined by Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, and Brett Kavanaugh.
