The State Department disclosed on June 10, 2026, that consular officers working with law enforcement identified several coordinated birth tourism schemes across West Africa, Europe, and North Africa designed to help foreign nationals obtain U.S. citizenship for children born in the country.

The Daily Wire first reported the existence of the networks. Officials said the operations relied on visa coaching, arranged housing and, in some cases, fraudulent documents to circumvent existing visitor-visa rules that prohibit travelers whose primary purpose is childbirth from obtaining entry to the United States.
