Allen, a California Institute of Technology graduate, was carrying a shotgun, handgun, and multiple knives when he approached the security perimeter. Secret Service agents confronted Allen inside the hotel lobby before he could reach the crowded ballroom.
A violent struggle ensued, with gunfire erupting during the altercation. One Secret Service agent was struck during the confrontation but was protected by body armor. The agent was transported to a nearby hospital and listed in stable condition, officials said.
