Secret Service armed suspect

WASHINGTON — Secret Service agents intercepted an armed suspect inside a hotel lobby before he could reach a crowded ballroom, where gunfire erupted during a violent struggle at one of the nation’s most heavily protected annual political gatherings.

A violent struggle followed the interception, during which gunfire erupted. One Secret Service agent was struck at close range, but officials said the agent’s ballistic vest prevented fatal injuries. The wounded officer was transported to a nearby hospital and was reported to be in stable condition. Allen sustained minor injuries before being taken into federal custody.
